One down...

Tommy had a really good day.  Pray he has a really good night!
Tom - playing rough with his dad just before bed.

Dry fit.  You can see the pocket screw holes in the rails to secure the bench top.

Glued up and clamped - what better place than in the middle of the kitchen?  It was too cold to glue up in the garage, and I wanted it inside where it's warm.  I've learned the hard way (at my mother-in-law's) that you shouldn't glue-up on a carpeted floor...  I added two additional rails in the center for strength because these are such long benches - should be able to seat 3 adults.

Ta-da.  With the top screwed on and the edges relieved with my new 1/2 inch, 2 horse router!

It fits under the table nicely, and sits just right for our table height.  One down, one to go.  Of course, there's a bit of sanding, staining, and finishing to be done...

Happy Valentine's Day

I went with the non-traditional Valentine's gift this year and bought Katie these teak stools for the kitchen.  She found them on the local online classifieds.  Originally the seller wouldn't come down to my price, but as my Father-in-law always suggests, I told her if she reconsidered her price to please call.  Katie was pretty disappointed, but the seller contacted me a week later relenting.  I bought them without telling Katie, and she was pleasantly surprised a week or two ago when I brought them home.  (Katie does our book-keeping, and I didn't think I could explain why there was a withdrawl from the bank, therefore I couldn't wait until today).  They're really cool - heavy teak, with iron rails for the back.  They'll look even better in our new kitchen... one day.

An update on the benches for our kitchen table - lots of glue-ups this week (done in the dining room, of course).
The turned oak legs that I ordered arrived.  They're a reasonably good match to the turned legs of the table, but about 2 inches too tall.
I made a sled to aid in trimming the legs exactly the same each time.

The sled allowed me to clamp a stop block, and clamp the legs down for safer cutting.
See that little wedge under the turning?  That kept the leg level during the cut because the turned part is narrower than the square bottom.
All done - 8 legs nicely trimmed to length.  The Heineken is for, uh, lubrication.
Cutting mortises on the router table, which is conveniently built into the wing of my table saw.  This allows me to attach my router fence to the saw's adjustable fence.  The router fence has handy storage for bits, and a vacuum port to clear shavings while working.
It took a few passes to cut those mortises and inch and a quarter deep, but they turned out pretty good.
A couple more glue-ups and I'll be ready to cut tenons in the rails later this week.

There are no good photos of Tommy this week.  He's had (still fighting) a stomach flu, and while I was tempted to take photos of his nursery and myself bathed in puke, I resisted.  He vomited his tummy dry over the course of about 4 hours one night, and it took 24 hours to begin his (ongoing) recovery.  Please be praying that we all get through this one.  My stomach and Katie's aren't quite right tonight either.

This post, from this point forward, is for my sister-in-law.  She fails to recognize the incredible entertainment value of youtube, so I'm posting a handful of my favorite videos for her viewing pleasure.  I know most of you won't bother to view them, but if you do, please enjoy.

Skip to :45 and be sure to appreciate the whistle...

Gotta give my Dad props for this one.

The fastest 7:42 you'll ever see, and well worth it. Again, props to Dad, a true youtuber.

Wiz won't even make it through the first 10 seconds... Best part starts at :55

This is strangely compelling - part of me actually wants to do this...

I did something similar in bedroom when I was in 8th grade.

Out of literally thousand of youtube explosions, I bring you the best one.

A 35 year fire? Cool. Be sure to read the description...

A Chainsaw bike? I keep checking ebay for one of these...

Speaking of chainsaws...

This is clearly not meant to be a comprehensive list of videos, but since Wiz won't even make it halfway I'd better quit now.
